Short Summary (English)

Because of her beauty and sensuousness, Emilia Galotti, the daughter of a well respected citizen, arouses the lecherous desires of the depraved Prince of Guastalla. But Emilia has become betrothed to Count Appiani, who because of his love for his fiancée, has given up his career at the royal court. The Prince of Guastalla, Hettore Gonzaga, constantly stalks and badgers Emilia with his declarations of love, firmly believing that she, like so many other girls in the past, will eventually succumb to his charms and testimonies of love. However, Hettore's attempts to win over Emilia come to nought - Count Appiani and his fiancée are preparing for their wedding.

Beside himself with anger, the Prince orders that Emilia be kidnapped. The abduction proves to be successful, but Count Appiani is killed in the process. Emilia is brought to Hettore's summer residence, where he repeatedly attempts to approach the frightened and confused - yet also fascinated - Emilia with his vows of love. Ultimately, Emilia's only choice is seduction or death.

When Emilia's father meets up with Countess Orsina, one of the Prince's mistresses, who tells him the terrible truth about his daughter, his horror concerning the future destiny of his daughter waxes ever larger.

Emilia fears that she will eventually succumb to the seductive powers of the Prince, and she therefore asks her father to kill her. In compliance with her wishes, Odoardo Gaiotti stabs his daughter to death.

Short Summary (Other Languages)

(Italienisch)
