Östliche Landschaft

Short Summary (English)

A refuse tip north of Berlin. A state has just been buried. It swiftly gets rid of its flags, and its citizens leave behind all the household effects and symbols that are potential reminders of the past. History has turned to rubbish. An old man tries some tones on his accordion while a young man throws his clothes away. Ravens hover on the horizon.

The film describes, without words, how many East Germans are eager to break their ties to the past after the German reunification and the end of the GDR. It is both an ironic portrait of the end of a society and a commentary on the transience and absurdity of human existence.

Short Summary (German)

Der Osten ist zur Müllkippe geworden, auf der sich der Rest der Zivilisation finden, Fetzen von Briefen und Formularen, beschädigte Puppen, halb vermoderte Messer und Gabeln. Zeitungsblätter wirbeln durch die Luft.

Eine Müllkippe im Norden Berlins. Soeben ist ein Staat beerdigt worden. Schnell noch entledigt er sich seiner Fahnen und seine Bürger lassen all den Hausrat und die Symbole, die an die Vergangenheit erinnern können, zurück. Ein alter Mann versucht noch ein paar Töne auf seinem Akkordeon, in junger Mann wirft seine Kleider weg. Am Horizont kreisen die Raben.
