Short Summary (English)

Everywhere in East Germany where the use of brown coal is promoted, man destroys the balance of nature and robs himself of the present und future basis of subsitence. It's a heavy burden on those who drag the coal out of the mines. Without comment, the film portrays the tragic dimensions of this conflict. At the same time it focusses on individuals who have to carry out this hard labor on a devastating low level. More and more the workers are forced to deal with the conflict their work entails. Above all they wonder about the consequences for the future. March 18, 1990 just happened to fall during the shotting of this film.

Braunkohle in der DDR, dort, wo sie gefördert wird, zerstört der Mensch das Gleichgewicht der Natur mit schwerwiegenden Folgen.

Die Bürde derjeniger, die die Kohle aus dem Loch zerren ist groß. Ohne ein kommentierendes Wort erzählt der Film von den tragischen Dimensionen dieses Konfliktes. Gleichzeitig setzt er Menschen ins Bild, die auf erschreckend niedrigem technischen Niveau Schwerstarbeit zu verrichten haben. Zunehmend sind diese Arbeiter gezwungen, sich kritisch mit dem auseinanderzusetzen, was sie tun. Sie fragen nach den Konsequenzen für die Zukunft. Zufällig fiel der 18.
