Short Summary (English)

Count Claudio, a member of Don Pedro's entourage, wants to marry Hero, the Governor's daughter. The Governor is in full agreement with the marriage plans, all the more so since his daughter happens to be in love with Count Claudio. However, Don Pedro's brother, Don Juan, is envious of Claudio's pending matrimonial bliss and therefore contrives a scheme to thwart Claudio's plans.

Initially, his scheme proves to be successful: Hero is accused of being unfaithful and is consequently disavowed by her fianceé. But finally, Don Juan's machinations are exposed, and now that Count Claudio has shown that he genuinely regrets his initial mistrust of Hero, the marriage can take place.

Meanwhile, however, Hero's girlfriend Beatrice and Benedict, who both delight in mockery and supposedly hate the opposite sex, now discover their love for each other.

And so it finally comes to pass that a double marriage ceremony takes place.
