Short Summary (English)

The knight, Götz von Bredow, who has just come home from Berlin's electoral state parliament, falls into bed to sleep himself sober. While he is asleep, his wife secretly steals his trousers in order to wash them. According to legend, no harm can come to the body or soul of any Bredow as long as they wear the elk leather trousers in question, which, however; may never be washed.

A tragic accident occurs and in the wake of the engulfing excitement, the trousers are simply forgotten. Hedderich, a merchant, finds them.

The privy councillor to the electoral Prince, Lindenberg, who in a game of dice with the clerical dean has just lost the money entrused to him, arrives at the Bredow family castle. In order to come up with some money, Lindenberg robs the merchant Hedderich, but because the merchant is wearing Bredow's combat clothing, he is the one who is placed under arrest. Hedderich, however, manages to unmask the true culprit, and the Prince sentences Lindenberg to death. This sentence is the spark that ignites a rebellion that has long been simmering within the ranks of the knights. An historical battle is fought in the [(6penick Moorland between the royalist and the rebellious knights, and Bredow proves to be instrumental in turning the tide of the battle in favour of the Prince.

Finally, a wedding is celebrated on the Bredow family estate, in Hohen-Ziatz castle.
