The DEFA Foundation is a charitable foundation.
The foundation realizes its mission primarily by promoting projects and awarding stipends and prizes at film festivals.
These funds are allocated in close cooperation with public entities and non-profit organizations that are actively engaged in promoting German film culture and cinematic art.
In accordance with our bylaws, the Foundation pursues exclusively charitable purposes. The DEFA Foundation cannot fund commercial projects.
The list of all funding decisions from 2000 to 2013 can be fund under the following menu item Funding Decisions (Förderentscheidungen).
The DEFA Foundation awards the following prizes annually:
Stipends and Project Funds
Funding through stipends and project funds had to be suspended in 2014/2015.
The reason for this drastic measure is the foundation’s difficult financial situation, which is a result of irregular and significantly lower payments made through copyright collecting agencies. Until now, revenue from the collecting agencies has accounted for half of the DEFA Foundation’s proceeds. Since 2011, however, the foundation has incurred high net losses. There is no longer sufficient revenue to cover the DEFA Foundation’s stipends and awards, which particularly benefit independent producers, film festivals, academics, film historians, and scriptwriters.
The DEFA Foundation can only resume awarding grants and stipends once the revenue side of things stabilizes. The directors’ awards at several film festivals and the annual DEFA Foundation Award are not affected by the suspension of project funding and stipends.
