Alfred und Lisa, genannt Al und Li, ein junges Ehepaar vom Prenzlauer Berg, haben beschlossen, sich zu trennen. Die Decke des kleinen Altbau-Zimmers, in dem sie leben, scheint ihnen auf den Kopf zu fallen - und vor allem Al, der leidenschaftliche Automechaniker und Motorradliebhaber leidet unter der Empfindung, sich nicht entfalten und ausprobieren zu können. Er nimmt ein paar Tage Urlaub, bummelt durch Berlin, trifft Freunde und Fremde, lässt sich treiben. Der Kaderleiter seines Betriebes stellt ihn zur Rede. Li, die als Säuglingsschwester arbeitet, leidet unter der bevorstehenden Trennung, macht kein Hehl aus ihren verletzten Gefühlen und wartet darauf, dass Al sich mit ihr ausspricht. Vielleicht kommen sie doch wieder zusammen ...

Li and Al share a cramped little room in an old building, which goes a long way towards explaining why they are thinking of divorce. It is practically impossible for Lisa and Alfred to find another fiat in their district, Prenzlauer Berg, Berlin. Particularly Al feels shut in, cramped and that his personal freedom is curbed. He is an enthusiastic car mechanic and motor-bike freak but cannot pursue his interests and hobbies. He wants to discover new things and tryout his own potential, developing his abilities to the full.

One day he takes time off work. strolls through Berlin, visits friends and gets to know new people - doing things without anything special in mind. He simply lets himself be carried along by his mood. His cadre leader at work takes him to task for this. And Li, who works as an infant nurse, wants to talk out things with AI. For she is suffering because of the looming separation, feels hurt by Al's behaviour and is hoping that they might still stay together. Maybe she will be proven right...

Eté 1965 à Berlin-Est. L’errance d’Al, un mécanicien en plein doute quant à sa vie de couple et à la vie tout court. Le seul film de fiction du documentariste et peintre Jürgen Böttcher, en plein dans le mouvement de cette nouvelle vague qui remuait le cinéma des années 60 un peu partout dans le monde. Mais l’errance, aussi belle soit-elle, n’a pas sa place en RDA. Interdit avant même d’être terminé, le film ne sortira sur les écrans qu’en 1990. Alfred e Lisa, soprannominati Al e Li, una giovane coppia di sposi di Prenzlauer Berg, decidono di separarsi, soprattutto perché lui, meccanico e motociclista per passione, ha l'impressione di non potersi realizzare. Decide, dunque, di concedersi qualche giorno di vacanza, scorrazzando per Berlino, incontrando amici e stranieri, lasciandosi un po' troppo andare. Il responsabile del personale della sua azienda gli chiede di giustificarsi. Li, invece, che lavora come puericultrice, soffre per l'imminente separazione, non fa mistero dei suoi sentimenti feriti e spera di riuscire a chiarirsi con Al. Forse i due torneranno insieme.
